I saw this done on various blogs and DIY shows so I thought I'd take a stab at it. My fiance and I recently had a garage sale and a friend donated two old brown lamps. Instead of selling them I snagged them for this project. I'm redoing two to place on our nightstands and below I have posted photos of my lamp overhaul!
Anyone can do this! All you need is a lamp, 1/4" twine, hot glue gun, lots of glue sticks and patience.
Use a lamp with great shape.
Start at the bottom and work up. Save the base for the end.

As you wrap the twine glue it down in various spots and remember to pull the twine tight with each wrap.

Once you reach the top then start once again where you began and work down covering the base of the lamp. Keep wrapping and gluing until all of the original lamp is covered.

This is your final product! Find a funky shade that goes with your room theme and let your guests think you paid hundreds for your DIY lamp revamp!

I'm currently working on refinishing an old dresser in a happy yellow color with an antique finish. Stay tuned for the photos of that!
